About ...

The Garfield Cemetery Association

The Garfield Cemetery Association is a not-for- profit organization dedicated to the care and maintenance of the cemetery. While the Association employs seasonal groundskeepers for lawn mowing and trimming, the other maintenance is performed by an active group of volunteers, who have undertaken repair and cleaning of many stones that were leaning, or that had tipped over.

These dedicated people take care of the annual Spring clean up, storm clean up, and they make sure each veteran receives a flag on Memorial Day.

Garfield Cemetery Rules and Regulations

 1. All lots in Garfield Cemetery are sold in accordance with the provisions of the State of New York and shall not be used for any other purpose than a burial place for deceased human beings.

 2.  The sale of a cemetery lot does not convey title to the land, but conveys only burial rights.  Cornerstones will be required to be put in at the time burial rights are purchased.

3.  The resale of lots is prohibited if they have been used for burials. If lot owners are interested in selling the lots, they must contact the Garfield Cemetery Association.

 4.   All deeds are subject to the rules and regulations of the Garfield Cemetery Association.

 5. Lot owners are prohibited from allowing interments to be made on their lot for compensation.

 6.   There shall be no permanent planting of trees, shrubs,or bushes.

 7.   If any trees, shrubs, or bushes situated on any lot become detrimental or dangerous, by means of their roots, branches, or otherwise, the Garfield Cemetery Association has the right to enter said lot and remove any trees, shrubs, or bushes, after due notice to lot owners.

 8.   The purpose of a concrete vault or grave liner is to deter the collapse of the grave. Concrete vaults will be required on all lots purchased on or after January 1, 1985.

 9.   All foundations will be constructed by or under the direction of the Cemetery Association. No foundations, graves, gravestones, cornerstones, or markers shall be dug or placed without their authorization.

10.  All monuments must have a concrete foundation and shall be under the direction of the Garfield Cemetery Association. Monuments shall be set up to conform to the general plan of the cemetery. Keeping a monument in a safe and proper state of repair shall be the lot owner's responsibility.

11.  All monuments must be set on foundations of concrete masonry, the size of which will be determined at the discretion of the Cemetery Association. No monument will be allowed in the cemetery until the foundation is ready to receive the monument.

12.  Graves will not be opened when frost or weather conditions warrant such refusal. Any additional costs incurred from snow or ice removal shall be passed on to the family.

13.   The Garfield Cemetery reserves the right to remove all flowers, wreaths, or other decorations, real or artificial, when they become unsightly. Weather permitting, all decorations will be removed for Spring clean-up no later than Good Friday, if they have not been removed by the owner. Summer plants and decorations shall be removed by Veterans Day, if they have not been removed by the owner.

14.  The Garfield Cemetery reserves the right to remove, after due notice to lot owners, any embellishment, effigy, or inscription on the lot which the Cemetery Association determines is unsightly or dangerous, or impedes the maintenance of the grounds.

15.  Each four by eight foot plot shall contain no more than two cremations or one burial and one cremation.

16.  A cremation plot measures 4 by 4 feet, in which one cremation is allowed. Cremated remains will be interred at a depth of two feet below the ground and will be permitted only in appropriate rigid receptacles, such as wood, metal, plastic, or concrete.

17.  Snowmobiles and wheeled "all terrain vehicles" are prohibited from cemetery property.

18. The Garfield Cemetery is not an insurer of monuments and is not responsible for any damage to lots and monuments as a result of vandalism. All lot owners should be advised that insurance coverage for vandalism of monuments is available in many homeowners’ policies.

19.  The Garfield Cemetery will not be responsible for any injuries incurred in violation of the above rules and regulations.

20.  Copies of these rules and regulations are available upon request to all lot owners or relatives of the deceased. They can also be found on site at the Garfield Cemetery and on our website below.
